Shrewsbury is the birthplace of Charles Darwin, and in 2009 saw the bi-centenary of his birth. It is also the 150th anniversary of the publication of his most famous work called ‘On the Origin of Species’.

England’s finest Tudor town is what Shrewsbury is known as with very good reason, there are black and white house’s everywhere with over 660 listed buildings, which are all linked together with old passageways or ancient shuts.

Shrewsbury hasn’t changed much since Darwin’s day, his statue still stands outside the library, which was placed there by the proud people of the town in 1894 –even though during this time he was considered a dangerous atheist. And the 2009 bi-centenary saw a huge range of events and activities that formed a large part of the Darwin festival.

The Historic buildings in Shrewsbury include the Shropshire Regimental Museum, which was once the Castle, and Shrewsbury Abbey, which was home to the fictional sleuth Brother Cadfael.

Shrewsbury has won floral awards and accolades such as a gold medal in the National Britain in Bloom competition, winner of the International Communities in Bloom, and gold in the European Entente Florale competition, all of which is why Shrewsbury is now known as ‘the Town of Flowers’.

The town of Shrewsbury, is surrounded on three sides by a loop of the beautiful river Severn. It’s easy to see why this town was established on this site when foreign invaders or neighbouring groups was often threatening. The water surrounding it acts as a natural defence to the south, east and west, while on the neck of land at the north is the highest of the two hills within the loop. It is thought that in the Saxon times various people began to settle on the land within the river loop, and Shrewsbury as a town began to expand.

The historic streets of Shrewsbury and its riverside setting is enhanced by its vast amount of independent shops. The town boasts many unique and individual shops of which many have vanished from a great many high streets – these range from contemporary – delicatessens, designer boutiques, stylish up to the minute interiors, organic food, Japanese groceries, handmade soap to – traditional a real ironmongers, a proper hat shop, a toyshop, Victorian prints, antiques, tobacconists and award winning wine merchants.

Shrewsbury is a very artistic town, with a wide range of creative talent choosing to live here, there are many places to stay if you’re choosing to visit, whether you’re looking for a handsome hotel, a cosy bed and breakfast, a comfortable guesthouse, a friendly farmhouse or a holiday cottage there is plenty to choose from.
