Reading dates as far back as the Saxon times when it was called Reada Ingas. Reada Ingas means the people of Reada. The name Reada also originates from the Saxon leader who settled in this part of country with his tribe during the 6th Century. Reading is first officially mentioned in the year 871AD during which time the Danes captured it. During Reading’s early years the main trade was within the Wool and cloth industry which was aided by good access from the rivers Kennet and the Thames. A grand Abbey was erected at Reading which was founded by Henry I. This had an influence and made Reading into becoming a place of pilgrimage. Sadly during the reign of Henry VIII the Abbey was mostly destroyed with the dissolution of the Monasteries. Reading was very largely involved in the Civil War where during that time it changes hand many times but eventually the Parliamentarians succeeded in taking Reading in April of 1643. During the 18th Century Reading saw the beginning of major Iron works and also during that time Reading became famous for its brewing. Trade was also increased with the manufacture of good access roads for the then major coaching routes between Oxford and London and the West Country. Reading has seen significant growth throughout the 20th and 21st Century. The population of Reading in the 2001 Census was 143,096 and Reading is twinned with Düsseldorf in Germany, Clonmel in Ireland, San Francisco Libre in Nicaragua and Speightstoen in Barbados.

Some of these attractions include the Museum of Reading, The Museum of English Rural Life, River Rowing and Rowing Museum, Reading Abbey, Forbury Gardens, over 850 listed structures and building and two National Trails. Reading offers great shopping and has a great night life offering many interesting bars to all. Reading also offers a great education up to degree level in the form of the world famous red brick university. Reading includes a vast diversity of accommodation for the tourist from budget to luxurious. Most major UK Hotel chains have accommodation available in and around Reading.
