Nottingham has a very interesting past of legends and lace, castles and caves. Underneath the chaotic streets is an unusual labyrinth of manmade caves, estimated at over 400 in total. The caves which are open to explore to visitors include the tannery, air raid shelter and Victorian slum.
Above the ground stands Nottingham Castle, although the original one was burned down during the English Civil War leaving behind the medieval gatehouse, the stunning ducal mansion that became to be in its place has many exhibitions which bring its exciting history to life and is also an interesting museum, known worldwide, and art gallery for contemporary and fine works of art.
Nottingham’s industrial past is mostly founded on its lace production. Nottingham was showing the way for the great lace making machines that ended up taking its production line from the small cottages to the large factories.
As well as Byron, Lawrence, and Robin Hood, other famous figures that have helped to develop our history books are; William Booth, the man who discovered the Salvation Army and who had his home in Sneinton on the outer edges of the city and the very intelligent mathematician George Green.
Nottingham also boasts of wonderful culture, it has many excellent theatres; The Victorian Theatre Royal and the modern Royal Concert Hall bring a year round attraction of music and drama to this lively city. Nottingham Playhouse is one of the country’s first rate places for contemporary theatre and the Malt Cross Music Hall, which has been fully restored to its 19th century glory, offers fantastic live entertainment that brings the spirit of the 1870s to the present day. Acclaimed for its innovative programming is The Broadway which is the first branch of the National Film Theatre. Nottingham’s best new venue is the new, amazing ice arena, which from April 2010, will make the city the UK home to ice hockey and speed skating, and will also bring an impressive 8,000 seat concert venue to the east midlands.
