Northampton is based in the East Midlands and is a large market town. The town has a population of around 189,747 people. Northampton does not have city status and the population figures make Northampton the 3rd largest town in England without it. Northampton’s population has grown a great deal since the 1960’s.

As an industrious town Northampton became a large epicenter for the shoemaking and leather industries. A small group of law firms established themselves in the area. Sadly most of the shoemaking factories are closed but the old factory buildings have been made use of and converted into living accommodation or offices. Northampton’s main employers are now within the financial and distribution sectors of the private sector. However, a number of Solicitor practices are still thriving and play a key part in the Northampton community.

Northampton’s main growth came in the 19th Century which was aided by the Grand Union Canal which joined the town in 1815 which was later joined by the railways with main lines going to London – Birmingham. This growth slowed after 1900 right up to the 1960’s. This wasn’t aided by the major decline in the shoe industry and as a result other forms of employment were also slow to follow.

Northampton was given the status of a New Town in 1968 and major work was planned to double the size of the town. Even with plan in place development and growth was slow. Slowly though with big improvements to the town in the form of Bus Station and shopping centre helped this lull pass. Local solicitors have seen a growth in business as a result. Northampton is largely deemed as commuter town due to its rail links to London and close proximity to the M11. As such the main legal areas of practice tend to be conveyancing and Will writting and related legal services.
