Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk, which is perfectly placed on the estuary of the River Orwell. The popular towns that are near are Felixstowe, which is in Suffolk, and Harwich and Colchester which is in Essex. In the census in 2001 there was only 85 percent of the population living within the town, even though it was the third largest populated area in the United Kingdom’s Eastern region, and is also known for being the 38th largest habitual area in England. In 2007 the estimated population reached an impressive 128,000 people. It is probably most famous for being England’s oldest and continuously habituated Anglo-Saxon town – with many medieval streets, and no less than twelve churches from the medieval times stand to show passers by the importance of the town as it developed during the hard times in the middle ages.
Ipswich has gone through an extraordinary rebuilding project in the past few years, mainly around the waterfront. This has meant that the past industrial dock area has been largely made in to a more residential and commercial centre, and it is being completed at the expense of much of the towns industrial and maritime past.
Ipswich is home to many famous artists, with many galleries such as the Town Hall, Christchurch Mansion, an interesting gallery situated in the Ancient House and the Artists Gallery in Electric House being more noticeable.
Ipswich has large open spaces which allow many places to walk, and for children to play and their parents to relax. The Christchurch Park is where you’ll find a beautifully kept Tudor mansion, which has wonderfully old clocks, furniture and a wonderful collection of work by John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough in an area which is just a few miles outside of London.
It is also well known for being the best for retail centres, having many big named shops, as well as designer stores. The night life is exciting and always lively everyday of the week and there are a great many eating places, warm and friendly pubs, cinemas, and two main theatres named The Regent and the New Wolsey Theatre.
