Situated in Lanarkshire on the West coast of Scotland, Glasgow is a fashionable and popular city for both the young and old. Glasgow was also voted “coolest City in Britain” in a very recent, nationwide survey. And also in 1990 Glasgow was voted European City of Culture, beating rivals Athens, Paris and Amsterdam.
Glasgow is the biggest city located in Scotland, and the understandably the third most popular city in the United Kingdom.
Glasgow originally had been developed from the medieval Bishoporic of Glasgow and had the major educational building of the University of Glasgow in the 15th century, which later became the influential centre of the Scottish Enlightlement in the 18th Century. The city also grew in the 18th century as one of Britain’s main attractions for the transatlantic trade with British North America and the British West indies.
The industrial revolution saw Glasgow become one of the world’s first centres of Heavy Engineering, mainly for its Shipbuilding and Marine engineering industry, which made many up and coming famous vessels of its time. This city is one of Europe’s top twenty financial centres and is home to Scotland’s leading businesses, it is also known for being one of the 57th most liveable cities in the world.
Glasgow grew to a massive population of over one million in the later part of the 19th and in the early part of the 20th centuries, and rapidly became the forth largest city in Europe, after London, Berlin and Paris. In the 1960s, there was a large project to move to new towns and suburbs which in turn had reduced the current population of the City of Glasgow area to 580,690, with 1,199,629 of people living in the Greater Glasgow area. Roughly 2.3 million people, 41 percent of Scotland’s population covers the surrounding area.
Today Glasgow is one of the most wanted places to work, study or enjoy a visit for the weekend, and this busy central city is growing and recasting itself to meet any challenges of hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The latest plays in the theatre can be located at the Tramway and the Centre for Contemporary Arts, while the residents have become famous for their new, raw talent, and the King’s and Theatre Royal present big name touring productions.
Glaswegians love their shopping and the city has got a fantastic reputation for offering the UK’s best shopping next to London, there’s the Italian Centre in the Merchant City, to the indulgent, designer label parade of Ingram Street, right through to the popular west end where there are many deli’s and specialist boutiques. And down Ashton and Cresswell Lane are many cafes and bars.
