Edinburgh is situated on the east coast of Scotland and is thought to be home to just under 500,000 residents. Edinburgh is known worldwide because of its fame in literature, culture and the arts, with the city playing host to a wide range of exciting events and festivals all through the year.

The main focus of the city of Edinburgh is the castle which can be found in the oldest part of the town. Placed on top of an extinct volcano which can be dated right back to the 12th century, the castles overwhelming presence can be seen from nearly everywhere within the city. And it is also houses the Scottish crown jewels.

Through the middle of the old town runs the Royal mile, from Edinburgh’s Castle to the Palace of Holyrood House, which was once home to Mary, Queen of Scots and now the official Scottish home to Queen Elizabeth II. There are many traditional pubs which serve fish and chips and even haggis, down this unique street, as well as shops selling traditional goods such as Scottish shortbread, Scotch whiskey, and tartan clothing. In the Old Town you can visit the museum of Scotland, the Royal Museum; the Scottish National Portrait Gallery; the national Gallery of Scotland; and also the Scott Monument, which shows in absolute glory Scotland’s most famous writer Sir Walter Scott.

In the 18th Century New Town was built and is the commercial place of Edinburgh. Here you will be able to enjoy many highly valued restaurants and nightclubs and familiar retail chains can be found. The sites of historical interest here are the well preserved Georgian House which is owned by the National Trust to show the lavish and expensive lifestyle of Edinburgh’s 18th century aristocrats, the architectural grandeur of Charlotte Square and Princes Street Gardens.

Massive crowds are attracted each year for the many unique festivals. The festival season begins with the New Year celebration of Hogmany and includes the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, The Fringe, the Edinburgh Book Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival. The Tattoo is the most famous festival as it symbolises Edinburgh’s pageantry and Scottish pride.

In the 11th century Edinburgh was confined to the small rock where the castle lies and is the Old Town. The 18th century saw it grow with a large number of streets and squares. And 500,000 residents are estimated to live here today.
