Cardiff known as Caerdydd in the Welsh Language is the Wales capital and largest city. Cardiff also has the largest population of any county in Wales. In the 2001 Census Cardiff had a population of 305,353 people. Cardiff was made a city in 1905 and was named the capital of Wales in 1955. As such it is also the legal hub for Wales. Cardiff has been around since the Roman Times. It began life as a Roman Fort which would have been built around 55AD after the Roman invasion of Wales which began in 50AD. This fort held a part in securing the Romans against the invading Irish raiders. When Roman culture began to decline around the 4th Century the fort was abandoned.
Main town Cardiff was built when the Normans successfully conquered Glamorgan. The Normans made use of the abandoned Roman fort and built a stronghold within the old Roman fort walls. A town culture soon began to build on the outskirts of the castle which by the 12th Century had been rebuilt with stone. This small Cardiff town would have only had a population of between 1,500 to 2000 people living there as in general Welsh towns tended to be small in size.
Cardiff has had a troublesome past as in 1404 the town was actually burnt to the ground by Owain Glendower. Cardiff was successfully rebuilt after this very quickly. Cardiff had its own port which was heavily used for trade with France and the Channel Islands. Main export items consisted of Salt and Wine and Coal with sprinkling of Iron occasionally. This peacefull port town was disrupted heavily by the English civil war but became settled once again once the Parliamentary troops quashed the rebellion of 1648.
