Aylesbury is a well known market town, and is full of history as the county town of Buckinghamshire. The town was a focal point in the English Civil War in the 17th Century, and is located at the foot of the Chiltern Hills at the heart of the of the rich agricultural Vale of Aylesbury.
The Aylesbury Duck made the town famous in the 19th Century. The famous Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery and renowned Guttemann Sports Centre ensure that Aylesbury is still a popular place to visit. The town’s market has been going strong since the 13th Century which is now complimented by modern shopping areas.
The town has a conservation area located close to St. Mary’s church, where idyllic cottages line the upper side of the town. The town has many claims to fame, as it is thought that Henry VIII pursued Anne Boleyn at the King’s Head and Roald Dahl wrote his classic children’s stories in the area. The market square, beautifully cobbled, contains the imposing statue of John Hampden –a local hero in the defeat against the Royalists in the English Civil War.
Aylesbury’s population has doubled since the 1960’s due to the new housing estates that have been built, trying to ease overspill from the housing estates in London, many people started moving from busy over crowded Cities to more favourable places to live such as Aylesbury.
The local newspaper is named ‘The Bucks Herald’ and its local radio station is mix 96. Aylesbury has many prominent building’s. The ‘Blue Leanie’ is an office block home to the well known Halifax Bank of Scotland, which caused a large hazard to the passing motorists when it was built due to the sun reflecting off its large outside surface. This problem was soon resolved with the planting of mature trees alongside the main road to prevent the dazzling of sun on unsuspecting motorists.
