Bald Man Triumphs Drug Test Appeal

A balding man who applied to join Northern Ireland’s police force was rejected because he was unable to provide an adequate hair sample for a drugs test.

The man, who cannot be named, was at an enhanced stage of the recruitment process for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) when he was deemed an unsuccessful applicant due to the inability for a sufficient hair sample to be obtained for drugs testing.

Due to the man being bald, he was unable to meet the requirement of a 3cm long hair sample. Further to this, he was unable to give a sample of body hair as an alternative. PSNI solicitors informed Belfast’s High Court that he is to be reinstated within the recruitment process and that amendments to the admission policies of the Police Service of Northern Ireland must be made to accommodate further sources of testing and analysis.

Upon being rejected from the PSNI, the man requested a judicial review to be undertaken, challenging his unsuccessful attempt to qualify as discriminatory and unfair.

When the case was opened on Wednesday, PSNI lawyers quickly accepted that the man shall be offered an alternative means of being tested.

The recruitment process for the PSNI is currently under review.
