Social networking sites should automatically have put on a restriction on children’s profiles, the EU Commission has stated

Social networking sites have a responsibility to ensure that the profiles of children are only able to be seen to their friends, and must not located on a search engine, the European Commission has just stated.
The EU has recently become aware that after a survey an increasing number of young children who were using the social networking sites, were listing the wrong date of birth in order to set up their accounts online.
EUKidsOnline asked an average of 25,000 youngsters across Europe and discovered that it was 38% of children between the ages of 9 and 12 that have set up an online social networking profile. It was 77% of young people aged between 13 and 16. The majority of social networking sites have put a ban on children being able to set up their own profile if they are under the age of 13.
Under the Safer Social Networking Principles, companies will be able to agree to give clear and easy to understand guidance to ensure young people can use their services safely.
With this, they have also agreed to only allow the children limited access, so they will only be able to view content which is age appropriate, and gives the companies power to delete children who are under age from using their service. These companies also have an obligation to give the users of the site certain tools to adapt their privacy settings, report offensive content and block unwanted contacts, the Safer Social Networking Principles have stated.
The survey which was recently carried out has discovered that 27% of young people leave their profiles open so that anyone can view their profiles. And also these youngsters who are between the ages of 9 and 12 were no more likely to restrict the access to their profiles than teenagers which had been asked, the survey had found out.
This survey had found out that 41% of the parents of these children who’s ages were between 12 and 15 have full access to the internet in their bedroom, which has risen from 31% since 2009.

Sometimes I know that it is hard to stop children from using social networking sites. If they are determined, they will find a way one way or another. The best way would either be banning the site through internet security, or banning the internet altogether. The latter is obviously not the best way. We cannot expect the social sites to play the parent when we have not tried our best.
