Police Complaints Statistics Revealed

The BBC recently successfully placed a Freedom of Information request to obtain and distribute police complaints figures.
The figures show that a minimum of 2000 police officers were subject to at least three complaints by the public between 2009 and 2010.
The statistics were recorded from forty-three of the fifty-two police forces and show more than five-thousand complaints were made against police officers in 2009 to 2010.
The police forces who received the most multiple complaints for a particular police officer include Lincolnshire, Northern Ireland and West Mercia.
The Police Federation represents more than 140,000 police officers throughout England and Wales, and has stated that the figures also include unsubstantiated claims and so cannot be relied upon in the fullest sense.
The figures show that more than two-thousand police officers had three or more complaints made against them as well as a total of over five-thousand allegations made against officers. The majority of complaints made against officers in the past year have been based on assault, rudeness, or failure of duty.
The police force with the majority of complaints and allegations against specific officers was the Police Service of Northern Ireland, with the Metropolitan Police, Greater Manchester and Kent following.
The majority of forces did not disclose the outcome of complaints made against them but of those who did choose to disclose more than 50% led to no further action being taken.
In July of this year Al Hutchinson, Northern Ireland’s Police Ombudsman, stated that the number of complaints received regarding officers was at its highest level in eight years, increasing by 14% from the previous year. In response to the disclosure of figures, the Police Federation said that its members did a complicated job in demanding circumstances.
