Mostafaee’s Wife and Brother in Law Arrested

Mohommad Mostafaee's whereabouts are still unknown. Mostafaee is a lawyer in Iran who has been advocating human rights. Authorities have now taken his wife and brother-in-law into custody in an attempt to get Mostafaee out into the open.
Mostafaee was working on a case for a woman, Sakineh Ashtiani. The woman was sentenced to be stoned to death for adultery, but Mostafaee stated the stoning was against the woman’s human rights. There was a great deal of pressure on Mostafaee to stop his case. He was first summoned to the courts on 21st July 2010 and the last summons was 24th July 2010.
Mostafaee’s wife and brother-in-law were detained shortly after the last court appearance. Hadi Ghaemi is a spokesperson for the Campaign. He stated Mostafaee has done nothing wrong, broken no laws, yet the court doesn’t see it that way. The courts feel Mostafaee should not be advocating for human rights.
The government is using Mostafaee’s wife and brother-in-law based on one law. According to Amnesty International any person can be held on suspicion of hiding a wanted person. The family is definitely being turned upside down over the court case and now Mostafaee’s need to hide. He and his wife have a seven year old daughter, who is thought to be with his wife’s mother.
Mostafaee is not the only lawyer or case to be harassed and even arrested in Iran for defending human rights. A number defenders involved in human rights cases are harassed, some arrested. The government sees them as activists that must be stopped. Reports have come back that many of these solicitors have been tortured, ill treated, and arrested since the June 2009 election. It is an election that was highly disputed.
80 have been sentenced to prison terms, with 12 sentenced to death. Many of these arrests involve political activists, students, journalists, and human rights activists. These arrests were made in December 2009 and February 2010. Mostafaee has much to fear being targeted by the government based on these numbers. It is quite possible he will stay hidden.
