Drink Promotions Banned in Bid to Prevent Crime

Alcohol promotions and competitions that encourage excessive alcohol consumption have been banned in a bid to drive down alcohol-related crime under new drinking laws.
A new mandatory code for alcohol retailers has been introduced to ban ‘all you can drink’ promotions and ‘doctors chair’ scenarios where customers are sat down and alcohol is poured into their mouth, resulting in an endorsed but uncontrolled consumption of alcohol.
In accordance with part one of the new code, retailers shall offer tap water for free to all customers to promote responsible drinking and encourage hydration to deter individuals from becoming excessively or dangerously drunk and committing alcohol-related crime.
The new code, which was first announced by Home Secretary Alan Johnson in January earlier this year, could save the UK billions of pounds each year as costs of alcohol-fuelled crime have soared over the past 5 years due to increase in the binge-drinking culture.
Part two of the code will be implemented from 1st October 2010 whereby all alcohol retailers, including pubs, bars and off-licences, must have in place an age-verification policy, such as ‘challenge 25’ as well as small measures of drink being readily available to consumers, including small glasses of wine, half pints of beer and single measures of spirits.
Any premises found to be in breach of the new code will be subject to a number of penalties, including the loss of their licence, a fine of up to £20,000 and/or a sixth month prison sentence. It is thought that many retailers will have additional restrictions placed on their licence at first instance, depending on the severity of the breach.
